cutting brass pen tubes

Barry in Richmond BC

>I've been dabbling with some different pen designs (based on a read of Kip Christensen and Rex Burningham's excellent book)and I really like their design for a euro-style pen, WITHOUT the central brass ring. This requires a longer lower barrel than comes with a standard twist pen kit. I've seen that PSI sells the 7mm tubes in 10 inch lengths, which seems like a good deal (in a pack of 10).

The question is: how to cut them cleanly? hacksaw seems to leave a very rough cut...pipe cutter?

Suggestions would be appreciated.

>Barry,

One of the easiest ways is to insert a 1/4" dowel inside the tube and cut it on your bandsaw, with a hacksaw, etc. If you use a bandsaw, you want to have a higher TPI than most folks on here use. You can cut it slightly longer, since you'll be squaring it up on your mill or similar device anyway. Another, less desirable way is to glue it into wood that is slightly longer than you need, and cut the tube that is glued into it. That works ok, but the dowel method works better I think.

>I am not sure what you would call it but the real thin abrasive wheel should do it I would imagine. You might have to experiment wiith different speeds. Now I will have to go cut one to be sure.

>The "long piece" method is the one I always use with the regular kit pieces. I always have the wood longer than the tube since I find any slop is usually worse around the entrance hole. I epoxy the tube then trim on the TS. Sometimes I trim a little too much and the brass is nice and smooth and shiny.

>Buy the replacement lower tubes for European style pens. I make almost all my slimlines using those as I like the longer lower barrels...
