Try brown, black, or gray. I believe you'll find that your work looks way better. I've quit taking pictures of my work until I can come up with a getter background.

>Well, I wasn't there for these pics, but Chuck usually uses a white sheet for the background, as I'm sure he did here. The problem may be with the digital camera not set correctly for the light source (i.e. camera may be set for sun, when he's using an incandescent (sp?) light source. I dunno, but I'm pretty sure it is a white backgound.

>Sorry about that. It must have been my computer at work. There the pic of the spalted bowl was as blue as the ocean in the Caribbean. After reading the posts that followed mine, I went back and looked again at the pic from home. Man, what a difference. I'm seeing a gray background now and the bowl looks even better than I knew it probably was. Keep up the good work.

>Great work! As a professional photographer I can offer a bit of advice as far as the pic goes. If you are using a digital camera, you'll need to white balance the scene before taking the picture. Most decent digital cameras have a white balance feature. . .Check your operation manual. White balancing helps keep the picture's color tone neutral, (without a noticable warm or cool color cast).

Also, it helps to keep the bowl close to the background to reduce light falloff on the background. Light falloff results in underexposure (darker/gray) tones on the backgorund. Of course, it's always best (if you have additonal lights), to light the background seperately. Tents are helpful as they can spread and reflect the light to evenly light the subject and background. A tent also softens the harsh light/hard shadow look.
