I sold my 2nd bowl today and for a good price. I will post the pictures tonight. I also have an order for another salt/pepper mill set - this one paid. So the woodturning is going well and actually adding to the bank account side of life.

But last night I got hit by a left hook and a right jab. My loving Great Pyrenes dog bit a neighborhood kid on my property and the IRS sent me a lovely letter asking for a (larger) donation.

The boy is fine and the bite did not puncture. While I know it is our responsibility, I am pleased that his mother does not intend to sue. She is begin very kind. Still, even a nip from a 120 lb dog hurts and I feel terrible for what happened.

The IRS also informed me I declared some income incorrectly and owe them a nice bit of change. I can see where I made the error and can not really argue with them. So now I have to figure out how to pay them back.

So I think the professional side of my woodturning is going into involuntary high gear. I'm hoping to sell my bowls to whomever is interested. If I sell between 50 and 100 at decent prices, I can cover the IRS donation. The peppermills cost a fair bit to make due to the mechanisms, but I will do those if I get enough interest. I'll also be starting some pens with the supplies I picked up over the weekend.

Any other ideas on venues, items, or just experiences with the IRS that would either help or just encourage me would be appreciated ;-/. It has been a tough day.

I'm praying my Pastor's favorite prayer today... "Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God". I know He will see me through this, just fighting the discouragement.

>Howdy Chuck. With us being so close to Nashville and all, you should write a song! Sorry about your misfortunes. Dogs will be dogs and boys will be boys - glad it was nothing too bad. The only few times I've been bitten by a dog - it was my fault (including when my wife's miniature poodle drew blood - I had him cornered and he reacted - I was playing, he wasn't!)! Hope the market for your work is good around here so you can get the IRS off your back. Hey at least we got a break from the rain for a few days anyway!

Take care, go make some shavings, it'll take your mind off. Works for me.

I know your pain. Mine will come back again when the water bill gets here, and that will be soon since the meter was read yesterday.

To bring everyone up to speed I had a broken water main at my house. The real bad part is the fact I couldn't tell it because of all the rain Memphis had last week. So for at least 3 full days my water was running constantly. The repair didn't really take long, what took a long time was the repainman fixing his mistakes (cut the copper pipe in 2 places when he cut the root that broke the water main).

Oh well, everything will get better. On the plus side with trying to sell more bowls and salt/pepper mills you will get lots of lathe time! And look at all those blanks you have that I rounded out for you!

>Chuck, just remember to either fully declare or artfully hide ( :-) ) that income you get from woodturning sales. Don't want to pay off the IRS with ill-gotten gains, they've already got their eyes on you!!

IRS - payment plan

>DAMHIKT but the IRS will in all likelyhood agree to set up a very reasonable payment plan for you. I have heard horror stories about vindictive IRS employees but my 1 experience was actually pretty painless. Just call the number on the notice & ask if you can set up a payment plan - admitting that it was your honest mistake should go a long way to them agreeing to work it out with you.

The prayer part will help also :-)

Speaking as a pastor, I like your pastor's prayer. Yesterday I get a call from a lady who is in the community in which I pastor. She is not in my congregation but needed an ear. Sunday we had a spring snow, sleet and freeze. She rolled the truck a few times on the black ice and totalled it. Thankfully she had only a few scratches which the RCMP called a miracle. The insurance company informed her that the truck (still needing three years of payments) insurance had lapsed April 7. My mother-in-law who has lived with us for 4 years had to go into assisted living the same day. "O God, o God, o God."

Keep turning, keep praying, and work out a payment schedule with the IRS.

I am sorry to hear of your setbacks, but remember, none of them are permanent! I hope your turning work continues to do well for you, but as has already been mentioned, be sure to set it up to keep as much as possible from the Infernal Revenue. We will be remembering you and your family.

Darrell, I am so sorry to hear about both of these ladies, I will pray and ask my class tonight to do the same.

Bill, I have decided to document any turning related activity - receipts and expenditures - in a log under my website name, "Life Takes A Turn" so that it is easier to show a concise and accurate accounting. I will be tracking every sheet of sandpaper I buy (which for me is quite a few ;-)). I don't mind rendering unto Caesar, but I won't give away the Colliseum!!!
