The finish and wood selection of this piece are very good. I am very glad that you stuck to just a couple of different woods and patterns - it keeps the piece from being too busy.

If I may, I would like to offer a couple of design suggestions:

1) I think that your design ring should be about half as big as it is now, and should be placed just above center (basically the top half of where it is now). I think that the current design ring overpowers that very elligant top and bottom sections.

2) I think that the very top ring could be a little smaller in diameter a just a touch thinner - otherwise, I think the neck size is about right.

3) I think that if I had done this, I would have started tapering down to the base from about the bottom of the (smaller) middle design ring faster than you have done here. I think that it would give the piece a lighter feel.

4) If you did as suggested in #3, then I would make the base thinner - not so tall.

5) Last suggestion is a technical tip - I noticed that in the design ring - the sycamore in the middle of the Purpleheart - your grain direction is not the same between the verticle and horizontal pieces. Make them so that they all go horizontal. I was doing this same thing until recently when I started doing the lacquer finishes. After about a month, the lacquer would crack at the joints of the verticle segments. Through normal expansion and contraction, the woods were moving in contray directions. If you look close on the Maple bowl I posted today - look at the Yellowheart square waves - the grain direction is all horizontal. I learned the hard way, and had to refinish two bowls - and they may crack again.

You asked for comments, Please remember these are just my opinions, and they way I might approach it. You skill in turning this bowl are quite evident.

You and Mark are going to make me take up segmented turning again. It's fun and challenging to do segmented work and I enjoy it. Your piece is really nice.
