New Segmented Bowl

>This is a bowl that I finished just in time for the Southern States Woodturning Symposium instant gallery.
It is 9" in diameter. It is the first round bottomed Southwestern form I have done. It has a small 1" spot on the bottom to set on.
It is Birdseye Maple, with Bloodwood and Yellowheart design rings set off with black and Maple veneers. The finish is Deft Clear Lacquer.

Question on the segmented bowl

The reason i ask is i tried to make a bowl like the last one you posted (walnut and holly i think) and the ring gets turned above the "equator" ie the detail ring face is curved after turning and the pieces no longer maintain the symetry, so i suspect you must have used stave construction to avoid losing symetry.

I do not do any stave turning (yet). With this type of detail pattern, I try to put it just above the waist of the bowl, so that the curvature does not distort the shape of the pattern. If the middle detail ring on this one were one ring higher in the shape, it would be quite distorted, if not destroyed.

>Segmented turning is ideal for the Mini-Lathe turner. You can control the size of the work, and you do not have the heavy - off balance large chunks wearing on the bearings. And you have all the power that you need (though I do like the 1hp VS motor that I have now).
I also think that a 9-10" bowl size is perfect for segmented work - though I would someday like to do large segmented platters and try one big Ray Allen style vase.

>It is still all about good shape and turning. The cutting is just a preamble - just like cutting the tree, splitting the log, rounding on a BS, etc.
You can do one of these bowls in a week of evenings and a Saturday.
The High Gloss finish is easy, it just takes awhile because you have to wait about 48 hours between spraying and sanding. With a good closed grain wood, like Maple, you can have a bowl finished like this in 10 days.
Remember, while you are waiting for one ring to dry, or the lacquer to dry, you can be working on another bowl.

>Thanx for that info. so you make 24 segments of an "L" design lying on its side? and then flip them alternating. the smaller angle will cause less distortion of the figure. this was why stave construction was first thought, the smaller angle 3.75 degrees for 48 pieces compared to 7.5 for 24.

Basically, I make a strip with one color on the top and a second on the bottom. I cut them with the sled like any other (24) segment piece, minus the thickness of the verticle piece. I then layout the segments one up, one down, and as I glue up the pairs, I glue the verticle piece inbetween them.
