>Scott - I am not an expert by any stretch. I started turning pens no to long ago. Here is what a fellow turner uses and showed me and I am very pleased.

I apply mylands cellulose sanding sealer to the turned blanks while on the lathe. I use a pretty slow speed then turn it up fast and it generates a bit of heat and dries the sealer good. Then I apply mylands friction polish by rubbing on the wood and then quickly turning on the lathe at a high speed. If you don't keep the polish pad or cloth moving a lot it will build up little rings of polish. The longer you hold the rag on the pen the glossier it will get. Sometimes I apply more than one coat. This process works for me and I am very pleased with the GLOSSY finsish. I started out with nothing but friction polish but the sanding sealer really helps fill the wood pores and creates an extremely smooth surface.

Apply CA as finish. Burnish with brown paper (grocery bag)

Shellawax Friction Polish, then EEE, then repeat Shellawax. Renaissance wax for protection.

Wax on bushings keeps CA from gluing everything together.

Bounty paper towel to apply polish.

That's all there is to it.

I use the same process similar to Jim's with a couple of additions. I sand up to 400, anything higher will not let the finish meld with the wood. I use 0000 steel wool between Mylands sanding sealer and friction polish. After the first coat of frictino polish I burnish it with plain brown such as packing paper or a paper bag [I have to keep thanking Russ for that tip]. After i build up several coats and buff, I put on a layer of carnauba stick wax to preserve the finish.
