Locate a laser pointer overhead so it is pointed downward at the tips of wings. This gives a permanent reference to where they are. When the beam is seen on your finger, it's too late.

Shine a bright incandenscent light at the area where you are cutting with the tool. This illuminates the ghost image so it is easier to see what you are doing. Incandescent because there is no flutter as there would be from a flourescent bulb. It also helps to dim the background light.

Move the On/Off switch for the lathe so you never have to cross the path of the wood to reach it. This becomes a real safety issue when turning large square pieces that are near the lathe swing cpaacity.
