I turned this pretty thin, It was almost dry when I took it off the lathe. If you could see it from the top, you would see the the entry hole has gone slightly oval. This happens quite often on these green thin hollows. I think this one is a little over 1/8" thick.

The other factor is the wood itself. This particular tree was a joy to work with. I have has some other maple that was a bear to turn. Some to the point that it made darn good firewood. :)

I sure wish I could have gotten the whole tree.

Thanks, there is just the slightest hint of a foot on it. And the floating effect is exactly the look I was going for. That was one of the things I picked up at Dave Ellsworths class a while back. It was great to see all the work in his house. He seems to have a piece by every woodturner you have ever heard of.

It was a real education to just look around and closely examine all the wonderful work he has at his place.

Of course, I know that you have been there, so you know what I mean... :)

Yes, I kinda remember those days too. :) Thank goodness for those Red Wings. I often tell my boys that the worst thing I ever did to them was to make them Lions fans. :) But someday, with the grace of God, and a few more good drafts, we may yet reach that magical goal. But if we do, I will no longer be able to afford the price of a ticket and a beer.
