I suppose some could guarantee some purity to it (like it hadn't been stored in benzene drums), but basically the chemical composition is pretty uniformly defined.
In the old days when I lived in the mountains, the standard place to get cheap mineral oil was a feed store, but those are hard to come across in Silicon Valley. BTW, candlemaking sites often have good prices on a lot of things turners use, including also beeswax and carnuba wax. The quality of their supplies is general high.
