Turning hats

>Yesterday I turned a green Madrone "hat" to 3/32 thickness. I then steamed it for 45 minutes and put clamping pressure to shape the crown to my fat head. BIG CRACK! So is there a formula for steaming/boiling/clamping and drying to get a "hat" instead of kindling?

>The "Hat Man" Johannes Michelson turns the wet madrone to finished size and then puts it on the form to shape it. As far as I know he doesn not steam them after turning, but simply puts it on the form. I've seen him turn hats several times and I never remember any steaming.
