Bowl Saver option?

>Recently there was some discussion about coring units. But I don't recall the conversation ever getting around to the lathe part of the equation. I'd appreciate any thoughts on whether my Jet 1236 with its 3/4 horse could handle one.

>Your lathe might be able to handle the Woodcut Bowl Saver. I have one and used it on my Record CL-3, which only had a 3/4 hp motor. It does work much better now on my Nova DVR 3000 with a 1.7 hp motor. The Mc Naughton system and likely the Oneway system will require more horsepower than your Jet has to offer.
One other option is to use a parting tool to cut out a core. This works pretty well on smaller size bowls such as the Jet is capable of handling. Mount the bowl with the top onto a screw chuck and a small faceplate. Turn the outside to shape and turn a foot for your chuck. Then use a parting tool from the headstock side and cut a "V" shaped cone from the center of the bowl blank. This works pretty well, if the parting tool isn't too thick. I use an old Sears parting tool with the top side of the bevel ground back into a long slope. Works pretty good.
