>This Buckeye Burl and Ebony vessel is 7 1/2 inches in diameter and about 4 inches high. It is thin walled and has a small foot not evident in the photo. It has been sold. Comments are welcome.
>I have a comment; that is the ugliest vessel turned from the ugliest wood and you, Wally, have a lot of nerve posting it for everyone to see!
AND just because I can't afford this gorgeous.... um I mean ugly, piece and the fact that I can't turn such a perfect......er ugly, vessel has absolutely nothing to do with it.
Man, I hate it when I get jealous!

P.S. Wally, I can't think of a single piece you've posted on any site that I don't love!
>I don't understand what it is about buckeye burl that we think is so attractive, but it is. I love this stuff. Just wish I could get my connections in OH to get me tied into a bunch of it.
Nice job Wally. As usual, I'm drooling. Thanks for allowing us to take a gander.
By the way, it has been explained to me that Buckeye trees don't burl as spectacularly nor as often outside the central California area. I haven't been able to verify this, and would like to poll the membership here. Anyone know if it's true? Since moving to SW PA, I haven't even found a Buckeye tree. I still have half of a 400 pound burl I shipped out, and it's one of those that's almost all black, with only highlights of yellow. Makes some spectacular pieces. If I can ever figure out which photo editing software to use, I have some neat stuff to share. Pity us old folks who don't keep up with the latest software. Any suggestions? Freeware?
I've been dealing with many home renovation projects since October. All indoor stuff....and now that spring is here I'm moving to the outside. Hopefully will have a new deck off the front of the house going in a couple of weeks....hey at least that could kind of be called woodworking? I'm really missing my lathe and being creative. I'm craving it. I had a storage barn built in the back yard the other day and stood inside it when they were done and just inhaled the smell of the the fresh cut lumber! I'm really tired of roofing, drywall, paint, and window treatments. Ugh.
Hopefully I'll be back in the swing of things soon. A sure sign that I've been out of the woodworking/turning loop....I tried to log onto WOW yesterday and I couldn't remember my password. When I entered my e-mail to get a reminder sent to me....it said that my e-mail wasn't in their system : (
>I think California Buckeye is a different buckeye from those here in the midwest. I have a bunch of Ohio Buckeyes (Yellow Buckeye maybe?). I never have seen a burl, and so far the only spalting in downed trees I've found is a lot less than spectacular. Not to mention the nasty sinus/chest congestion that resulted in cutting some without a dust mask.
Very nice! The ebony works really well with the buckeye. It's barely visible in the pic, but I really like the rings on the top. That makes the piece seem more elegant somehow to me.
I like that vessel. It almost looks like some kind of stone rather than wood. I think the black accent at the top is a great touch for that piece. But the stone-like look of that wood is very interesting.
If I had seen that bowl I would have tried to pilfer it. Thanks for keeping me honest. Just looking at your display cabinet keeps me in my place. Beautiful piece. What about the one you had on the lathe when we were there?

Sunshine, mid 60's my kind of weather in Longview, WA.
>That is an awesome piece Wally, as ever your form looks great. That wood is something else. I had never heard of that before. The finish looks top notch too.
