>I agree with Joel. I tried dying my own wood and couldn't get it to penetrate more than 1/16 on the side grain so as soon as you start turning you lose the color. You can paint up to the wood you want to stain with lacquer or shellac and then stain just that area.

I would suggest if you want a black rim on the bowl:

1) use a dark wood to begin with - Walnut comes to mind.

2) Put a layer of black veneer between the bowl and the segmented rim

3) sand and finish the bowl to completion.

4) moisten the wood so as to raise the grain

5) sand again

6) now apply your black dye to the wood carefully - with the veneer in place, you now have a small barrier between the rim and the body of the bowl - this and the glue lines will keep the dye from migrating/wicking into the lighter colored wood. As others have mentioned, India Ink is probably the best really black dye that you will get.

7) after completely drying, apply several coats of finish to seal in the black before knocking off the nibs with a fine sandpaper.
