BubbaBob has screwed up and needs Jet...

BubbaBob

>...help. I tore up my 1014 lathe. I backed off the tailstock handwheel till it has separated from the othewr end where the MT arbor is...I cannot get them back together where the wheel screw will retract the MT end. The MT end has a keyway, but I cannot seem to line the keyway up with a key, at least by feel. What now?

>Bob, that keyway is where the screw that tightens the thing down goes. Try orienting it so that the keyway slips in past where the locking lever is and you should be able to get things realigned.

>Bob,

1) Back the allen screw in the handwheel out so that you can pull the Handwheel off.

2) Push the threaded rod that the handwheel was attached to through the tailstock toward the headstock.

3) Once you have it out, thread it into the MT2 Piece.

4) Back the side locking screw out all the way.

5) Insert the MT2 assembly back in the talestock so that the keyway is lined up with the locking screw. - Push it all the way back.

6) Screw the locking screw/handle back in so that it goes into the keyway, but is not tight.

7) Reinstall the handwheel.

8) DONE

While you have it apart, it is a good time to clean it out and lightly lube it.

OK....

>Two things

Make sure the you are threading it the right way - if memory serves, it is left handed thread.

If the treads are buggered up on the end, you could clean that end of the shaft up with a bench grinder - grind away the buggered up threads and chamfer the end.

I screwed up mine a few years ago (messed up the slot the E-Clip goes in. I finally go around to replacing it late last year. Now mind you the lathe is more than 3 years old. I called Jet Service, and they sent me a new one for free because it was less than $5 to replace, and they paid the USPS shipping. They are in Nashville by the way.

Re: Classic Story

Mark Mandell - Gone Round In Jersey

>My Old Man, grew up in the Bronx at a time when, if something in the apartment needed fixing, you called the "Supah." Then he gets married (to Mom) and moves to The Burbs where there is no Supah.

Comes the beginning of the first summer, Mom asks Dad to bring the screen door up from the basement and put it back on the kitchen door frame for some air.

Time goes by with vague mutterings outside the kitchen door that slowly grow into significant vocalizations in a deep shade of blue to the point where she can no longer ignore the situation.

"Joe? Is something wrong with the door?"

"Been at this for 15 minutes and every one of these @#!%&!! screws are defective!"

"How come?"

"Not a single one of them will go into this #@&*!* wood!!!"

"Oh. Well, why don't you try turning them the other way?" she says sweetly. . .
