wanted to publicly thank you for the lathe and tools. we got home without incident. i took it into the shop, what a bear to move by myself. set it up to make sure it ran as well as you said. (ok, i really wanted to play with it, but had too much homework to play around so i convinced myself i should test it). well 4 hours later, i had been through 4 small logs, the phil irons book, and even made a half way decent bowl.

i can tell this lathe is going to get me in trouble.

thanks again for your help and tell your friend that it truly is a great lathe.

Don't know if you like oak but the tree service I've worked up a relationship with (just dropped the dispatcher off a bowl today) cuts down a lot of oaks and I always pass on them. Red oak smells like vomit when wet, but white oak is fine.

>The smell of beech isn't too bad compared to others (like elm). Beech logs and rough outs have a tendency to crack especially around any crotch figure so take appropriate action. My biggest problem with fresh beech is that it is so featureless that it is ugly ... however, it spalts beautifully!! Cut it up into half logs, Anchorseal cut surfaces and place it so that one end (the end grain) is on the ground. Protect for rain and sun, and in about 6 months (depending on the time of the year), you will have some highly prized wood.
