I assume that the cause is incorrect positioning the cutter against the wood. In both cases, I was using a gouge. Experimenting with blade and hand position, I was able to remove all of the damaged wood the catches caused. Yes, I'm very inexperienced. At this rate I may be more experienced quickly.
