I've got a small hunk of redwood that was cut and used as a wine cask around 100 years ago in California. You can still smell the wine and there are bits of crusted sugar from the grapes on the sides. I've never decided exactly what to turn from it.

Just wondering. They certainly do not detract from the turning.

>Actually those are not dry spots, but are worm holes in the sap wood. I spent nearly two hours picking the holes clean with a sewing needles help in forceps and an aircompressor.

Was a fair amount of work.
