Norm Abram Turning Question

>I have seen Norm Abram turn spindles on the New Yankee Workshop. He never looks comfortable doing it. I'm sure I've seen him cutting a cove or a bead but usually he is only shown cutting a flat with a spindle gouge. I sometimes wonder if somebody else actually does all the more difficult parts of his turnings?

I am a Norm fan and have met him 4 times...very nice fellow. But watching him turn is a lot like watching my wife program the VCR. ;-)

I often wonder how much help he has for everything, not because he needs it, but because he may not have the time to prepare everything himself. You don't fill a brad gun in just 2 seconds!

As for being tenative cutting beads and coves, I'm sure he is for no more turning than he does. On the other hand, If I was balancing a router on the edge of a 3/4 board routing a mortice for a hinge I'm not so sure I'd want that on video either. I don't think he claims to be a wood turner and I give him a lot of credit for doing the small amount he does. What has done is make general wood working achievable for a lot of people who didn't think they could do it, including me.

I don't see much help during those complicated glue ups that require five hands and the neighbors helping!

>Yeah, I must say that if he does actually do all the turning it's not half bad. I saw him turn some parts for a small console table and he did a good job.

Good point about editing the tricky stuff. I would love to see a show of out takes. Maybe Norm could do an out take show just to show he is human and make us hackers feel better! ;-)

>On the Felder group website a person said the New Yankee Workshop has a sort of camera seetup to show Norm all day long. It takes a picture every few minutes or so. The person on the Felder group setup some program where it went out to the website every few minutes and copied the picture and then put them into a slide show so you could watch them in real time. He said the pictures showed Norm standing around scratching his head and figuring out what to do. Like most woodworkers.
