>Greetings everyone

Earlier last week I was happily turning away in my shop when I received a phone call from a man in our church. He had called to tell me that good friend of ours was turning 85 this week. We have a custom in our Sunday School class for everyone who attends, from infant to elder. Every Sunday during opening exercises, anyone who has a birthday that week goes up front and everyone sings Happy Birthday to them. Then they receive a pencil as a small gift. So my friend Don wanted to know if I could turn a pencil for Pepper as a gag gift. I said I would be glad to do so in honor of his reaching such an age and doing so well for it.

Here is a picture of my efforts. I turned this from poplar, and then started getting creative. The tip is a piece of artist's charcoal from the art supply store. The paint, both yellow and silver also came from the same store. The eraser was a bit of a challenge, but I have a box full of PSA backed rubber pads that were perfect in color and texture. Pepper sure is going to be surprised. Oh yeah, one more thing - this isn't your ordinary average pencil. for a big birthday, it needs to be a big pencil!

This baby is approximately 33" long and 2" in diameter. He will be able to write with it, but once he wears the point down, he is going to have a tough time sharpening it! As an aside, while I was sanding the tip of it on the lathe the other day, the UPS guy showed up with a package. He walks into the shop and says, "How's it goin"?" I replied, "Fine, I'm just sharpening my pencil here." I think he may have hurt his neck with the double take he did. Then he got a good laugh out of it. I hope you all do too.

Thanks for looking.

Bill

>I need one of those. Then, for the first time I would have a pencil I couldn't lose in my shop! ;-)

I am jealous of Pepper!

>Hi Bill,

That is just great, I just wish I could see the look on his face when you give it to him. It should be priceless :)

On another note, what is that in the top right of the second photo? It looks to be hanging from the ceiling.

Anyhow, great stuff!!

>Bill,

That is one big pencil. Very well done with all the detail you took with it. I hope he has a Happy Birthday and his shirt pocket is big enough to hold it.

That's a new one one me. Thanks for sharing it.

>Howdy everyone

Well we had a blast with this thing this morning! We have a very small church, but there were four or five people up this morning. My friend Don, who instigated this whole thing, was the leader for this morning, and he passed out pencils while I waited outside in the gathering room. As Pepper was reaching for his pencil, Don said, "No, not you, we have something a little bigger for you." I walked in with the pencil behind my back. People started laughing as I passed them by and they saw what I was holding. I got up to Pepper and said, "Didn't he give you a pencil?". Pepper said no, he didn't." I revealed the one I had and said, "Here take this one then." Below is the expression on his face. I am on the left, Don is on the right.

Dave, to answer your question, what you are seeing hanging down in the second picture is my Moffat light setup. I have them hung from an L shaped black pipe bracket, and mounted on a disk of turned wood. I have two of them which I can bend around to light just about anywhere I want while turning.

Thanks everyone for your comments. We all had a lot of fun with this, and it made for a great surprise for a great guy. By the way, he got his nickname Pepper when he was 14. He was playing ball at the time, and there was a famous pro ball player named Pepper Martin (our Pepper's name is Martin also). His coach hung the name on him 70 years ago, and it stuck. He was quite the ball player himslef, although he did not make it to the majors.

Thanks Bill

>Hello Bill,

Thanks, that was just the picture I wanted to see. The expression on his face is the greatest gift of all. Also, congrats to who ever was quick enough on the camera to get this great shot.

Thanks for the info on the Moffat light setup, I think I asked you this before, but they say the mind is the second thing to go, or is it the first... I can't remember.:)

Best wishes,

Dave

>Hi Doug

I teach regularly in church (every Sunday to be exact) and I remind people on a regular basis that it is God who created our sense of humor, so He must have one too.
