There are 2 hole sizes in the base and 2 in the top.
Base: The bottom of the base is recessed 3/8" with a 1-1/2" hole to hold the grinder mechanism. Then the remainder of the base cylinder is bored at 1". I had to bore from both ends with my Forstner bit and, low and behold, they actually lined up.
Top: First you have to drill a 1/4" hole through it for the steel rod. The the tip has to be counter-bored at 11/16 to receive the tenon of the adjusting knob that you see on the top.
Technically there is a 5th drilling size as you drill 4 tiny pilot holes for the screws that hold the cap plate and the mechanism.
Hope that clears it up a bit less than mud. ;-)

Oh, and have a set of calibers handy to keep measuring the outside as you shape it. You don't want any part of the base to get down to 1" ;-).
