Each kind of wood will be different; some will crack, no matter what you do, some doesn't crack too badly, etc. The best advice I can offer is to turn it as quickly as possible and then give it a coat or two of Anchorseal. Until you can turn it I have the best luck by leaving it in whole log form; others seem to like to cut it into short pieces and Anchorseal them. Just jump in and start trying things, you'll lose some no matter what, but you will be on the road to gaining experience that will guide you the next time.

>I was told alway leave them rectangular if you are not going to turn them right away. This way if they do crack you can still get a nice bowl with out the cracks. I hope that make sense. So if you have a blank that is 6 inches wide and 10 inces long and checking dose happen you still can get the 6 inch bowl. hope that helps.

>Harvey, I find that I can put the round blanks in a plastic garbage bag and they will keep much longer than just leaving them laying on the floor. They may mildew/grow fungus but that is mostly on the surface anyway. It doesn't hurt to dump them out of the bag every 6 weeks or so and let them dry for a day before re-bagging. So, another variation to try.
