>Since we were talking about tool handles the other day and I used this gouge this weekend I thought I would post a photo. If I remember correctly I bought the 1/2" bowl gouge from the Serious Lathe co. The handle is Cherry with Brazilian cherry in the middle and maple around that. As you can see it's about 40 inches long and absorbs vibration quite nicely.

>I've never been a fan of using a roughing gouge to rough out bowls. It's way to easy to get a catch with those wings sticking up and you can break the gouge. The Serious lathe gouge has a 1/2" round shank so your less likely to break it. It's a great tool.
I like a side ground gougefor roughing. My 3/8" gouge wasn't bad but the handle was short. When I'm roughing really out of round things this big gouge is the trick.
