>I'm looking to move up from the Jet mini to a larger lathe for Bowls, Platters and Hollow vessels. I have it narrowed down to the Vega 2400, Jet 1642, and the Nova DVR 300. I have played with the Jet and Nova at Woodcraft but I'm not having much luck finding a review of the Vega.
Does anyone here turn with the Vega or the other two that would care to comment?

>I turned on a 2400 at the NC Woodturning symposium and really liked it. It is however a completely different animal from the 1642 or the DVR. If what you are wanting to do is big bowls I think it would be a good choice. Very smooth and stable.

I was originally interested in the 2400 bowl lathe but decided to forget about it when I realized I couldn't use my Jamieson deep hollowing system with it. I then check out the info on their 1500 model, found it to be unsuitable for me, and decided on a Vicmarc instead. In any event, it seems to me, that what you want to compare the Vega 2400 to is the Stubby. Neither the Jet nor Nova you mentioned are bowl lathes; that would be like comparing oranges and plums. The Stubby costs about twice as much as the $2595 Vega 2400 but that is their top of the line heavy duty machine with 220 volt 1 phase,inverter drive 2 hp TENV.
There must not be that many Vegas around as when I inquired about them I received very little info.

>I don't think there are any Vega lathes in my area to look at.I spoke to Vega and Packard trying to locate one . The EVS starts to put the Vega out of my budget at this time. I can get the Jet locally at Woodcraft for about $1750.00 including the 10% dicount on Jet tools making it the front runner.

Have you given any consideration to the Powermatic 3520A? Slide the headstock toward the end of the bed and you have any easy access bowl lathe. There has been a bit of discussion about this lathe as several folks posting here have one (me included). Cost is just over $2000 last time I heard.
