>It depends on how many "branches" of turning you want to get into. If you want to do segmented work a tablesaw is real handy. Doing pens then a drill press is a good tool to have. Want to glue ups some pieces to perhaps make a large platter then a jointer can be useful.

What I've found is that I probably used every one of my major flat-work tools to support the lathe. Don't despair, like everything else if you don't have a certain tool there are ways around it.

>a grinder with the appropriate alumunium oxide wheels or a belt-sander arrangement to sharpen your tools. Then you can think about sharpening jigs if you don't want to freehand your sharpening.

Definately a bench grinder, and a saw of some sort to cut logs. Bandsaw and a chainsaw is ideal.

>As others mentioned, bandsaw and chainsaw stand out as almost "must haves" if you are going to turn bowls and harvest wood yourself. If you are doing spindle work (candle sticks, tops, yo-yos, small boxes, etc) from turning blocks, then your needs are a lot simpler. I would suggest turning a lot of scrap (if you get construction scrap, make sure it isn't treated exterior grade stuff) before getting anything additional.

If you do get a bandsaw, the 14" with a riser is pretty much the minimum (but also seems to be the mainstay) for turners.
