>As others mentioned, bandsaw and chainsaw stand out as almost "must haves" if you are going to turn bowls and harvest wood yourself. If you are doing spindle work (candle sticks, tops, yo-yos, small boxes, etc) from turning blocks, then your needs are a lot simpler. I would suggest turning a lot of scrap (if you get construction scrap, make sure it isn't treated exterior grade stuff) before getting anything additional.
If you do get a bandsaw, the 14" with a riser is pretty much the minimum (but also seems to be the mainstay) for turners.
