>I have a Vicmarc VM100 scroll chuck that has an insert for a 1"8tpi spindle. I will have to change the insert to accomodate a 1.25" 8tpi spindle if I get the new lathe I want. I tried to remove the insert this morning but find myself unable to do so. I inserted the aluminum lever into the insert hole but can't turn it. I started beating on it with a hammer but stopped very quickly before I broke the lever.

Is there a trick to changing the insert? Can anyone provide some insight for this? Does that thing possibly a left hand thread? The owners manual certainly doesn't say anything about that.

I had the same problem recently. Fortunatly I had a steel rod that diameter and I used that and the Locking hex rod to break them free. I layed in on the work bench so one rod was on the bend and tapped the steel rod with my dead blow mallet.

If you put a very light layer of air tool oil on the threads and on the mating surfaces it will stop this from happening.

>For the future, buy yourself a spanner wrench. They grab at the bar hole much more effectively than the lever bar that comes with the chuck. I have both the VM100 and the VM120. The same spanner wrench works for both and they are only a few dollars. I use the key in the chuck for the counter lever and have never had to use a cheater for either chuck.

I have two lathes with different spindles, so I go back and forth occasionally.

Before putting on the next adapter, use WD40 to clean out the sticky protectant they use and wipe dry. Then give a spritz of silicone spray before assembly. If you find you'll be changing often, use or make a thin nylon washer.

(:0 Seriously, the silicones migrate like crazy and wreak havoc with finishes, creating fisheye, lack of adhesion, etc. Russ can probably explain it better, but it's almost impossible to remove once it gets on a surface, and the resulting pits in the finish can drive me even crazier than normal. I picked up this info while painting cars and motorcycles, back when silicone spray was considered a wonder spray, like WD40.
