Maple Vessel....

>This is another vessel styled after the SW Indian pottery that I like so well. Many of the thousand year old pots found in museums are cracked and have holes in them. Diameter is 9 inches. It has a round bottom, in keeping with the originals.

I haven't tried anything like this. I am watching out for a piece of wood to try a hollow form this sort of shape. These pottery inspired ones put a slightly different slant on them, and I really like the effect.

>The "donut" system, my name for it, has been around for quite a while. You'll find Bill Grumbine's version of it on his website. I first discovered it in the late 80's when I visited Jack Straka, a pro turner, in Hawaii.
My version of it uses 1/4 inch plywood for the donuts because it's somewhat flexible and with a little padding where the 3 bolts are, I've never damaged the finish on a piece. I've done hundreds of bowls and vessels using this system.
I'll take some photos some day and post them.
