>Whats a nice Roughing Gouge to use for when you first start?
At the moment I have the Crown but its only about 14 in long and my hand gets a good workout holding it till rounded some.
I just got some Sorby Bowl gouges and a HD bowl scraper, and the bulk and length realy make a diffrence from the smaller tools.

>The P&N roughing gouge that is sold by Lee Valley and soon Woodcraft. It is milled from round stock instead of forged from flat stock, leaving a much stronger tang. It is a very solid item that should last thoughout your turning career.

>You stated the main reason I like big 1.25" or bigger roughing gouges. They come with long, heavy handles designed for handling the pounding from taking off corners. I don't like 3/4" roughing gouges because the 1.25" will do everything the 3/4" will do but its bigger and heavier to soften the pounding. I have the Hamlet 1.25" roughing gouge. I suspect the similar size Sorby or Henry Taylor or whatever will have the long heavy handle like my Hamlet. All should work. Get the cheaper one. As for the tang being weak because its forged, true. But roughing gouges are always used with only about 1/2" or less of projection in front of the toolrest. Not far enough to stress the tang or the steel if used properly.
