Using a scraper on the inside...

>I was wondering if there was a better method for scraping on the inside of a bowl... I really have no problem at all on the inside at the bottom, then everything goes well at the transition... then as I proceed towards the rim the pucker factor increases steadily ... and I can't use the scraper at all near the rim...
I'm guessing it's the deflection of the rim plus the increased speed that the bowl is turning at the rim ....
... so, is a steady rest the answer?...
... decrease the speed?
Cut the rim area first with the gouge while there's still wood supporting the rim... then don't go near it?
Right now I just make the best pass I can with the gouge, and smooth out the bottom and the transition area with the scraper, blending the 2 areas together, and don't go near the rim with the scraper....
