Loosen the set screw(s) and loosen the handwheel slightly. Need to lock spindle to do this. Tighten the set screw(s) and you should be ready to turn.

Your belt may need adjusting. Basic rule-of-thumb, with your finger, you should have as much play as belt is wide. I.E 1/2" belt, 1/2" deflection.

You don't need to worry about tightening your wood between centers too tight and the belt should not be loose and not too tight. Try using it again after readjusting the belt. If the handwheel gets hot again, check the rest of the lathe on that side, specifically the grey box below. If that is hot too then it is a design flaw or bad motor. If the rest of the lathe doesn't get hot and it's only the wheel, check the inside spindle on the turning side and see if that gets hot. If it is then the problem might be in the bearings. If that's not hot then check the hand wheel and make sure it's not rubbing against anything. I put this last because I also assume that you would hear it rubbing if it wwas hitting something.

Sorry for the delayed response. I've been busy getting my shop together.

Yes. It does have the drawer. I will take a look at the hand wheel as you suggest. The heat is clearly centered around the wheel; around the motor it is not hot.

There is no rubbing at all. It runs smooth. My guess is a problem with the bearings.

The individual who sold it to me has contacted me. He said to continue using it; if it gets worse or other issues develop he will get it replaced under warranty.

I got the lathe from Terry. He is working with me through VicMarc to get the problem resolved. VicMarc is having me check various things like the handwell, etc. I can't see anything obvious except that the runout is .003" and when I put a long spindle on the lathe that had been turned on another lathe you couldn't keep it from flying off, no matter how tight.

Since I've been running it there is now a noise coming from the motor; kind of a scraping click. I recorded it for VicMarc. But the lathe runs very hot; and now rough. When I first got it I didn't run rough.

Yes the drawer is underneath. It has the VFD option.
