Wally, are you busting on me? ;-) You are certainly right though, it is a bit of a departure. I like to do a couple pieces like this from time to time, and I've even been thinking of a hollow form or two for this show coming up. At my last show, I had a demo hollow form that I had finished up just because it was there. It was sitting in a pile of roughouts, and a lady dug it out and demanded that I sell it to her. Who was I to argue? I did a little bit, but she insisted, and then, after she bought it, revealed that she and her friend were there as a "secret agent jury", and invited me to another show which will take place this fall. It is even in an art museum! I may have to do more of this art stuff. ;-)

Wow, I really like that! I certainly don't mean for you to take this the wrong way, but if someone had just shown me that piece with no name attached to it, I wouldn't have thought of you! It's certainly not that I wouldn't think you could, but I might not think you would, if that makes sense :) I really like your pieces that are large and hefty and just seem to be begging to be used as "functional art".

Outside of the piece being a great use of a piece of wood to highlight both the skill of the turner and the beauty of the wood, I think it is awesome that I was surprised by who did it! I think you will do really well in the art/bowl show coming up. I'd skip the pony-tail, though, as far as I can tell, mine's never helped me sell a bowl :)

I guess I was a little surprised at first when I read Wally's comments, but then followed up with yours I thought, yeah, maybe I do need to do some more artsy pieces once in a while. I'm getting too predictable here. ;-) This is still a functional piece though. It can hold candy, but I don't think I would put my mashed potatoes and sauerkraut in it!
