>As some of you know I got a new Powermatic 2035A. they've changed several things from the previous models to improve the lathe. One change however was to extend the spindle and add a notch so you could lock the faceplate on with a set screw. Good idea unless you happen to own several chucks of various brands. they screw on and stop as they contact the face of the threads. They don't bottom out against the flange like they should.

I made a metal adaptor ring to fill the void and then contacted powermatic. They sent me 2 of the plastic washers they sell to keep the chuck from locking up on the lathe. They work perfectly.

Now all my faceplates and chucks work. This was a good idea that didn't take into consideration the wide range of tools that some of us own.

Now if they'll just include indexing with the lathe.

the 3" face plates and drilled out the bottom,

then had a mechine shop threw the rest of the

plate out. Now they screw all the way down, but

don't stick out past the face.

I have 2 faceplates that when screwed all the way down about a thread and a half of the spindle actually sticks through the faceplate. The washers stopped that.

>John, Congrads. I just got my new 3520A this week and noticed its supplied 3" faceplate has two locking allen screws. But mine does screw all the way on, once the screws are backed out enough. It took a lot of ingenuity and patience to get that beast off of the pallet by myself.

The Powermaatic faceplate that comes with the lathe works perfectly. Unfortunaly Ihave 4 or 5 faceplates from other suppliers and about 10 homemade faceplates. I also have a Vicmarc and Nova chuck. They are all to short to fit on the spindle without the spacers. E-mail Powermatic if you have a problem and they will probably send you a couple of spacers. John

>Good point John, I may have misread your post--thinking your supplied faceplate wouldn't fit. Looks like I'll also need to pickup some washers. BTW, have you or anyone else figured out how to interpret those digital numbers on the controller into something useful like RPM?

>I went home last night after reading this and checked my gear out. The faceplate that came with the lathe - no problem. The insert/adapter for my SuperNova chuck - no problem. The two faceplates I bought from Craft Supplies - no problems either.

All of them screw on and mate properly with the collar.

I'm not asking for problems, but was it common for older faceplates to have shorter collars?

>Many of the older (and not that much older) lathes had short threaded sections on the end of their spindles. Most had no more than the recommended minimum 4 or 5 threads engaged, and there were a few with less than 4. They started getting longer on all of the new lathes that were introduced about 8 years ago. They became longer yet, with the advent of locking grooves and set-screws in the hub of the attachments.

I've had a chuck come loose when the electronic braking took over. Fortunately in that case I had the tool rest near the edge and it stopped the bowl from coming off. A set screw in the chuck adaptor would have stopped that. I've never had it happen on small things.

Actually the readout is handy. I did some sheet metal work that effectively raised the readout box and turned it around so that the digital face could be seen. Then I copied the page that has the readout to RPM matchup.

Now I don't have to guess nor stop and go 'round back to see what I'm really doing.

If there is any interest I could send a digital photo of my rig.

>One caution when using any kind of spacer. If the spacer does not have truly parallel sides, the chuck or faceplate will end up with a tiny amount of wobble. I have several very large stamped washers that I use as spacers, but I don't use them with chucks. I only use them for two sanding disks when I don't mind a bit of wobble. Joe Fleming

I first built a metal washer but the metal lathe I have is really poor and My skills match. I didn't notice any wobble on my chucks at all but when I put the 10" extension that I bought for the Beal system it had some wobble at the end.

When I got the new nylon washer I tried the same adaptor and the wobble was reduced considerably to almost zero. Obviously my metal washer is off.

>Just got a new 4" Oneway faceplate for my new Powermatic 3520A. The Oneway plate screws on tight, no gap. I'm still deciding on a chuck. But since I mostly turn bowls the old fashioned way, a chuck is not a necessity for me. I got a couple washers just in case.

>I use spindle spacers that were made by parting them from the end of a piece of end-grain Oak after drilling a hole with a Forstner bit and turning the outside. They do the same thing as the plastic washers, they are more durable, and they have the advantage of being any thickness I need. Since I can't make perfectly flat and parallel surfaces with the parting tool, I try to make them very slightly dished in the center when a straight edge is held across the surface. That way they contact the two steel faces at their outside rather than center area. With use, the wood will be compressed until there is full-surface contact.

These were made so I could use my existing faceplates on a long adapter for a new lathe, and only as a temporary fix until I could purchase steel spacers or replace the faceplates and a chuck. That was 10-years ago, and they are still in use.
