Extra Burl?...

>I turn a lot burl wood and have lot's of left over scraps. This is one way to use it. The clock is 3 inches in diameter. After truing up the back, I mounted the burl on the lathe using double faced tape to turn the recess for the clock.

I do something very similar, although my method is a little bit "rough and ready" compared to yours. I take the pieces of burl that are left over, run a side or two over the jointer, and then run the piece through the table saw to get as many flat and square sides as I need. Then I drill the piece out on the drill press with a Forstner bit of the proper size, sand all the cut sides, and it is done.
This piece is actually off the same burl as the vase which I just posted. The clock is a 50 mm (that's 2" for us Americans). These things sell so well it is hard to resist the temptation to carve up the entirel burl for clocks! But I resist any way. I was able to get two clocks of this size off that burl in the process of squaring it up for turning.

That must have been a pretty large burl! On my little Jet Mini, a piece the size of your clock would have been a shallow bowl :)
I really liked your vase pic down below, but I really like seeing the flat section of that burl. Neat stuff.
