The list isn't too long for what you'll need. A pump and a means to get the vacuum to the chuck are for starters. I use a Gast 1/10 HP rotary vane pump and a E-Z Vacuum Adapter. For chucks, I bit the bullet and bought the Oneway chucks. Get the largest chuck that will fit the work you're turning. I have the 5 1/2 and the 3 1/2. The rest of the things you need are a gauge, hose and some fittings. I got these things from McMaster Carr. If you would like I'll send you a picture of my setup. Just e-mail me.

Al Crandal did an article on making your own Vacuum Chuck, complete with a parts list. I made one and love it.
