I'm glad you decided to snag some of that wood rather than ditch it.

Next time you final turn some, try that wet sanding trick (50% mineral spirits/50% varnish) I spoke of. I will bet you will totally love the results.

>This bowl was a challenge. I had never turned butternut before and was unaware of what to expect. While it does turn very easily, tearout is a bear. I resharpened several times and able to deal with it. The results were worth it. I am not sure I would want to try a closed form with butternut until I have much more experience with turning.

>You are right. Once I figured out what to do, I wound up going very thin and was able to get rid of all the tearout with a very sharp gouge.

The results were worth the effort. So was the experience of turning so thin.
