Looking for a lathe comparison
Wolf Kiessling
>I feel a need to upgrade my Delta 46-701 lathe and decided on a selection of four possibilities. This is determined by cost and capability of the machine. The four I decided on were the Woodfast, Vimarc VL300, Powermatic 3520 and Nova DVR3000.
I went to Woodcraft in OKC yesterday, looked at the Nova and decided I just didn't like it. I contacted Craft Supplies in Provo and had them give me a rundown on the Woodfast and Vicmarc (which, to me, almost look like clones of each other)and on a basis of that rejected the Woodfast.
This, of course, leaves the Vicmarc (shortbed with the 1.5 hp motor)and Powermatic. I know there is about a six or seven hundred dollar difference of price between these two machines
but want to disregard that for now.
Is there anyone here who has used both of these machines and can give me an unbiased opinion on them? I am assuming that the Vicmarc is a better lathe based on the cost difference but I also know that price is not always an indication of superiority. I would appreciate it if someone could give me a good comparison on these two machines. I can get the specs out of the catalog, I am more interested in personal opinions regarding reliability, ease of use, smoothness of operation, etc., that sort of thing.
Thanks
