Whoooooosh surprise

Don Henthorn Smithville, Texas

>A contractor dropped by today to see if I would turn some spindles for a Victorian porch job he is doing and I agreed to do the job. I prepared the stock and started turning. I am using California Laural, myrtlewood for the Oregon tourists, because I had a piece that is thick enough for these spindles. I attached my dust collector hose to the lathe to pick up the sanding dust although with the cheap bags I have it just gets spread out to the rest of the shop. I sanded the first spindle with the collector running and needed to do a little shape change so I switched the collector off and picked up the chisel to begin cutting, Suddenly I felt this cool breeze blowing in my face and my eyes were full of dust. What the---. Then I realized that after the collector fan died down enough the bags fell over squeezing the remaining air and dust out through the collector hose and into my face. Ugh!!!! Strange, it has never happened before. I was a little more careful after that.

>Don, I just converted my Dust Collector to a cannister and all that start-up dust was eliminated. The 20" cannister costs about $150 and just clips on....no drilling, no mounting brackets.

I had the lower bag explode. Actually it tore open but it covered the shop with dust. That's not a problem with my new Jet dust collector. John

>Hey Don:

Yes that is a problem with all bag type collectors. They push back out dust of the smaller variety through the pipe all the time when turned off. I formed the habit of closing the gate immediately after turning off the collector for this reason.

Now that I've switched to a cyclone (Oneida), don't have that problem anymore. Just another reason for having that type unit instead of bags.

>Thanks for the tip, TDanial. However I have made arrangements for an auction towards the end of April and almost all my tools and stuff will be on the block. There comes a time when one has to face the realities of life and I have reached that point where my obligation to others supercedes my desire to work wood. I'll be keeping a Jet mini and a scroll saw just to keep a little sanity.

>Don,

Why don't you post what you have to sell here so that your buds can get first crack?
