Charred Ash

>I charred my first ash bowl using a propane torch this weekend and it looks great. Only slightly roasted one finger. Now, I am not sure what would be the best finish to us on it. I know some of you out there have done this before and could save me the dreaded "I wish I had". Thanks in advance for you advice.

As for the bowl, sand it lightly to take the loose ashes off the ash, but not enough to get down to bare wood. I have used Jel'd Poly coat over pieces I have burnt and it works well. Jel'd Poly coat (available at Klingspor) is a rub on Poly that has very nice application properties. I don't like a lot of the others.
I imagine you could spray other finishes on it as well.

>I've only tried burning on smaller items, up to around 4" diameter. I usually burnish the piece with shavings (on the lathe - another good way to burn your hand), then use a friction polish. Or make the grain stand out even more by wire brushing the piece - very messy.
