Another good option is the Oneway Talon.

Can't beat the machining on that Vicmarc though. It's really well made.

>I purchased a Jet 1442 almost a year ago. It was my first lathe. I ordered a Grizzly chuck for $36 and it worked well until the holes used to tighten and loosen the chuck started to elongate. Grizzly replaced the chuck. Now, a Oneway Stronghold is on order but I have not received it yet.

For the money ($36), the Grizzly is a good chuck, but it will probably not last you many years of continued use. If you are not sure of what you want then the Grizzly will serve you well while you figure this out. Then when you do figure out what you want, the Grizzly will be a convenient second chuck and backup chuck. I am not trying to sell you on the Grizzly, but if you need some time to think about it, something in this price range may be what you need.

I have the "supernova" model. Its very nice, but that chuck drives me out of my mind.

My Oneway Talon is on pension plan on my 1018 Lathe. It keeps jamming on me even though I take it apart and clean and lubricate it. It will work for a while and then start getting tough to tighten. This most likely is due to its open construction. I also don't like the chuck key and prefer the simple hex that is used in the Vicmarc. I have 3 Vicmarc VM100s and 2 VM120s I do production work and have three lathes [VL300, VL100, 1018]. This allows me to leave the most common jaws I use on without taking time to change them. The body is enclosed and doesn't gum up like the Oneway. It has indexing holes in case you don't have an indexer on your lathe. I also enjoy the dovetail jaws instead of the teeth that the Oneway has. My work has little or no marks in the foot when finished. I also like the smaller woodworm screw.

I also heard that www.1goodturn.net sells Vicmarc, too.

Terry Daniels on this board was selling Vicmarc but I don't know if that included chucks.
