Oil Paint on Wood?

>I have a white Holly vase that I would like to paint a scene on it with Oil paints.
Should I 'prime' the wood first with something like lacquer? or does it matter?
Should I put a final topcoat on over the whole piece? or just put the lacquer on, paint the scene and leave it be?
My brother is the paint artist and I thought it would be nice to do a collaborative project.

I have used sanding sealer and/or shellac. I use mostly shellac as an underlayer because it's compatible with everything. I've also used thinned lacquer. Mostly because that was what I had in my spray gun. I'm not an expert on what's compatible and what's not. I always run a test on a scrap piece.

>I agree with John. I've been doing some collaborative work with a friend and I'm sealing the wood with a washcoat of shellac and topcoating with superblonde. Make sure that the oil is fully dry first.

I would test a piece first, but my brother is in Florida, so I don't have easy access to the paints unless I go buy some. But it was firewood to start with so I'll only lose time.
