>Hi folks,

Haven't been turning much in the bowl category this past week or so because I have been wanting to make some hollowing tools. These are the first turning tools I have made. These 2 tools came from the ideas our fellow WC'er, Darrell Feltmate, has on his website for an "Oland Tool" and for an angled tool.

So now, any tips on hollowing technique would be greatly appreciated. I think I have the basic steps from John Jordan's video.

Handles are 16" long and the exposed bar is 9-1/2" of 3/4" steel.

Now I'm heading out to see how they work ;-).

>These tools will do well to get you started. You should have a rounded scraper for cleaning up the surface of the wood. You'll need a hook tool, (some call it a swan neck) if you plan to do vessels with small openings. They can be made to take a 3/16 in. cutter or a rounded scraper. it should be designed so that the cutter lines up with the shaft to help get rid of torque. It's used with the hooked portion beyond the tool rest.

I did round the tip on the straight tool and the diamond tip is rounded as well. I plan to start with moderate vase shapes until I get the hang of it, then make the swan neck tool. I have a 3/16" HHS bit as well.
