Long spindels

>I'm turning some spindels in the 46-50" range. Have just purchased a spindel steady to help with the vibration problem I'm sure everyone has experienced. My question is should the spindel rest be placed in the very center of the piece (which is the logical reasoning) or offset to the center to keep the piece from occilating? Sometimes the obvious isn't the correct answer.
