Spirals on my spindles (dont want them)

I'm just about finished cutting about 40 spindles. I cut most of them at 1250rpm on my Jet 1236. About halfway through I decided I wanted to speed up the spindle to 1650rpm and when I did that I began getting spiral artifacts where before it was smooth. Go back to 1250 and all's well.
I'm thinking that my working speed is a harmonic of 1650rpm and thus I'm getting the marks?? Comments?

>the combination of (long) length and (small) diameter makes your spindle vibrate under the tool pressure. this is what generates the spirals. in addition to light pass and sharp tools as usual, you can try to solve this with a steady rest (home built with roller wheels. but it will take time to setup and remove for each 40 piece), or use one hand to stabilize the piece. you can also try to decrease the pressure from the tailstock. there was a previous thread regarding long thin turning a couple of weeks ago with lof of infos

That sounds like the culprit to me. One way to check it is to go even faster. I generally turn spindles up to 2 1/2" in diameter at 2300 rpm or faster, faster going along with smaller in diameter. If you get the spirals at the faster speed, it may be that you are pushing too hard with the tool, or that it needs sharpening. If you don't, it it probably a harmonic oscillation thing at that particular speed.

I did increase the speed and it still occured. It did not happen at the slower speed.
I finished all the spindles so it's OBE anyway but once I get a break I'll experiment. It may well be the tool since I'm using a Sorby Spindlemaster, which I like, it may have been in need of some honing and it was just a coincidence.
By the way Bill, the wife gave me some turning lessons from you for christmas (she really has a friend there she wants to see) so at some point we'll have to arrange that.
