Nova with a 24" swing? [long]

>I need some advice. I have turned on my Nova 3K (1.5 HP DC motor) for years but the 16" swing is a bit restrictive. I routinely turn 18-20" vessels with the head turned 90 degrees and use a free-standing (Delta) outboard stand as my tool rest. Although the tool rest is sufficiently easy to move around, it is a bit dangerous since it has a tendency to tip into the turning. I have Technetool's Outboard Rig made specifically for the Nova but I find it clumsey to move (especially small movements), not particularly stable, and limited to shallow vessels.
What I want is a Nova with a 24" swing. So, what is wrong with this strategy: I was thinking of attaching Oneway's 17" bed extension to my lathe stand 12" below the spindle and 90 degrees to the Nova's bed. I would also support the outboard end of the extension with a leg coming from the floor in order to provide vertical stability. With the headstock turned and the banjo from Oneway's 24" lathe on the extension, I will have have a bowl lathe with a 24" swing capacity for $550 (one tenth the cost of their lathe). Granted, it will not have the heft of a big Oneway lathe but it should be functional if I use common sense to decide what is "too big" or "too unbalanced". The small motor will also limit blank size. My present stand (weighed down with 300 lb of sand) is the large stand Technetool posted on their web site.
The intent is to turn these large vessels more conveniently and safer. Questions: Would the bed extension ever be stable enough (I cannot imagine it would be less so than the Delta free standing tool rest)? Will I prematurely tear up my beloved Nova and thus end up with no lathe? Specifically, will I ruin the bearings and/or drive mechanism? Are there specific alterations I should consider for my existing (or new) lathe stand to make it sufficiently stable?
I would love to hear what you guys have to say. I would prefer to be aware of all potential problems before I experience them. No thin skin here, so blast away.
