lathe chuck

>I am new to turning, I have turned a couple of things on a friends lathe and I loved it so I finally bought my own lathe off of ebay. I've been trying to figure out what type of chuck I need, the lathe drive spindle has a no.1 morse taper and is also threaded 3/4"x16 left hand. Could anyone give me advise on where to look for a chuck. And what is the difference between left hand and right hand?

>Georganne, right hand means that the chuck would be turned clockwise to screw on the lathe. Left hand would be counter clockwise. Most lathe headstock spindles are right hand thread and one stands at the lathe with the headstock on the left. If the lathe turns counterclockwise one would need to stand at the lathe with the headstock on the right. I am surprised that the lathe you purchased turns in the counterclockwise direction.
I am not a great expert on this but I doubt you will find a chuck that has counterclockwise threads. Before you invest too much time and money on this lathe I would advise you to see if you can find a local turning club and ask for help from the members. You will find them eager to help and will get good advice. Best of luck.

It would help to know what lathe it is. There should be some kind of identification plate somewhere on the lathe. Also, if your Ebay purchase was recent, it may still be up on Ebay so we could look at it there, if you wish to share that auction number.
Many chucks are fitted to the various lathes by means of an adapter. The chucks are the same, and you just order the adapter that fits your lathe. If your lathe is really strange, you may need to have a machine shop make you a special adapter.
Don has a good suggestion of contacting a local turning club. Let us know what kind of lathe, and we'll try to help out!

>Thank you for your help the ebay item # is 2378035082. All it says is that it is a NIB 391/4" 4 Speed Lathe. I did email BestWood Tools and they said they could make an insert for $75.00. Another turner said to check Onaway that they had LH and RH inserts. I will take any and all help I can get.
