Here is a link to the anti-virus program I have been using for a couple of years. It has been working perfectly for me so far.

The link does have a sample program to check if your machine has any bad stuff on it. I was using Norton on my old machine, but this was included on the new one. So far, so good. But then again, I never open any attachments... ever.:)

If you can hang on till tonight, I'll post a site that offers a freeware product (AVP)that is supposed to be as good as the commercial software. Once my subscription to Norton runs out I may be switching to this one.

I have been using this product for a year now. I have been happy with it. It is a no effort way to keep the barbarians at the gate.

They have a free trial download. Updates are pushed a few times a week to keep your protection up to date.

We (the company I work for) and I use McAfee. I happen to like them the best. But most of the others are good too.

Look for an Email from me with an attachement. It is called stinger (come from McAfee), and it will clean the current infestation on your computer, but then you need to load the AV software you buy.

Do not forget the spyware. It slows you down and can cause more problems. I use the freeware program Ad-Aware to clean up on a regular weekly schedule. If you buy their program, about $ 29.00 it will do the job for you.

If it was spyware Spybot should detect it but Spybot doesn't say anything about it being on my system. Also, I read a computer security newsgroup and there is no mention of Ad-Aware being spyware plus there are recommendations from time-to-time to scan your machine with it and Spy-Bot daily.

My business receives over 500 emails weekly, I'm very sensitive about everything that enters and leaves my systems.

Norton Systemworks comes with, among other features... Antivirus, Pop-up ad stopper, even will delete banners if so desired. For a few more bucks you can get a firewall.

Look around for specials on Norton at places like Best Buy, Staples, Office Max. I just purchased a package deal and after rebates my cost was $5.00. If I renewed my subscription it would cost me $20.00. Either way it is cheap way to prevent problems like BubbaBob has now.

Labeling something spyware based on a query from your firewall indicates that you don't understand spyware or firewall protection. You need to be far better informed before offering advice in such a technical area. I know, because it's a good part of what I have been doing for more than 35 years professionally as a software engineer.

I don't disagree with people using Norton for their security needs. However, I consider it rather bloated and prefer to use Sygate's free personal firewall behind a NAT router, Panicware's free POP-up stopper and McAfee AV. I use a Yahoo email address for newsgroups and forums and thereby keep my "important" private email address spam free.

We used to use Symantec (Norton). However, their focus was so wide spread to other all-encompassing products, that they lost sight of the Anti-Virus goals. When we tried to un-install Norton, it would not do a complete un-install. Symantec permeates the registry to the point that you have to manually delete files, DLL�s, registry entries, etc.

Symantec actually admits that you cannot fully un-install their software� Nice, huh� and people want them to �protect� their computers when they deliberately prevent you from uninstalling. They also claim that trying to install another brand of A.V. will cause conflicts� especially since you cannot fully delete their software!

You can get a utility from their web site to assist with removal. However, any company that will not provide comprehensive removal options is a company to be concerned about.

While in London on business, our company installed AVG Anti Virus software. They specialize in corporate applications and also provide a free edition you can download. Just look under their download menu � �products.� They are a leader and one of the few companies of this size that will support upgrades to a �free� version of a software package.

The �Free� version is a full version that includes on-line virus library updates, fully configurable, scans incoming and outgoing e-mail and certifies it virus-free, automatic scheduling of scanning, etc., etc, etc� I have it installed on my home system and have NEVER had a virus issue. Give them a look see� maybe save you a trip and a buck or two in the process. (BTW, I had to go through all the hoops to manually uninstall Norton� not a pretty picture.)

No affiliation� just a very satisfied customer!
