>In response to many requests, here's the modified grind for the Kel McNaughton coring tools that I have used. Yes, I've cored bowls on my Jet 1236 (before I got 2 bigger lathes). I originally heard of this grind from Ruth Niles (www.torne-lignum.com) who got the idea from Mike Mahoney. The top is the original grind and the bottom is my modified grind. I simply created a "V" scraper from a straight scraper.

I tried it out and it works great. I have since compared the original grind (borrowed a coring set from a friend) to the modified grind...side by side tests...and found that the modified grind is less grabby and easier to control, albeit a bit slower.

As I stated in another post, I feel that the banjo plays a major role in the performance of this tool. I'll tell you right now that the Nova banjo is just barely adequate with regards to the forces exerted by this coring tool. With the force on the tip, the leverage applied to the banjo is very great. It actually will twist/bend the cam causing the tip to drop, which changes the angle of attack, and you get a "grab". It still works, but you have to go slowly.

On the other hand, a Oneway banjo is rock solid. So solid in fact, that I've bent the knife that I borrowed from my friend (replaced it, of course) while coring a little too enthusiastically.

Yes, I very much concur. I mentioned this when did the comparative review of the different coring systems. There are two things that will help with this. One is to tighten the cam to locking plate bolt on the bottom of the Nova banjo. On ever one of these I have encountered, even though initially tight, you can achieve about one quarter additional turn. This will improve things significantly. The other thing to do is to use a plywood spacer between the headstock and the banjo, as demonstrated in the Oneway Easy Core tape (and I believe available for download from their site). These spacers not only will help with positioning the banjo correctly for different coring depths, but also will help stabilize the banjo against twisting.

I must admit, I was a little disappointed that Teknatool did not upgrade the Nova 3k banjo, like it did with the tailstock, when it came out with the DVR. Of course, the tailstock upgrade came after several years of my leading a campaign for its improvement. Perhaps you can keep the pressure on for a banjo upgrade :-)

For most things the banjo is really quite serviceable, but it is, IMO, the weak link in the system right now. Of course, with any moderately priced lathe, there have to be some compromises, and overall, Teknatool has done pretty well balancing them on the DVR. With respect to coring, the Easycore and the Woodcut systems don't have the same problems with respect to the banjo DVR banjo (the Easycore, of course, because it doesn't use the banjo at all; the Woodcut because it used a platform to support the knives and it integrates tailstock support).

I notice that you've ground for a "centered" point. Know if anyone's tried an off-center grind?

My set is ground somewhat skew-like with the inside points of the tips slightly longer than the outsides so it creates a cutting edge that's not square with the axis of the knife. Your photo actually shows this. I'm wondering if just easing the slightly longer and sharper point will address the "grabbiness" without compromising cutting speed.
