Formula, Potion, Magic Words, or Luck?

Mark Mandell - Gone Round In Jersey

>Have started down Hollowform Road, but am seeing that deformation of the piece when turned from green wood (s.o.p. 'round here) is going to be a heavy issue.

What and/or how do you Experienced Ones do to either keep the piece round or end up with a round form? Endgrain (with/without pith, pith drilled out and plugged)? Face grain? If you double-cut, how do you remount the piece (jam-chuck, vac, waste block, heavy foot-block) when dry, and how thick do you leave the walls (10% of the diameter like bowls) during the "rough-cut phase??

So little time, so much wood.

>Mark,

There's a very comprehensive article by Emory McLaughlin, addressing that exact question, in the premiere issue of Woodturning Design. This 1st issue should be on news stands within the next week or two...link to the mag, below.

>Depends on the size. So far, I've had great success with small forms. Top left is 10" tall and 4" wide. Right is 7" tall and 4" wide. Bottom is 6" tall and 5" wide. All turned very green (i.e. cut one day, turned the next) and very thin (1/16" walls, 1/4" bottom). No problem with warping to speak of (so minor that you'd have to use a micrometer to measure it). I got into a hollow form jag awhile ago and turned about 40 in a week. 1 thru 5 took awhile, but 6 thru 40 took about 90 minutes each.

>You appear to be cutting end-grain only, correct?

Do you include the pith or work on stock from either side?
