>Hi Scott, Nice piece. If I see a problem with the piece, it is in the proportions. It seems you could have made TWO hollow forms out of the same piece. There isn't enough width to balance the height. That makes it difficult to create a smooth continuous flowing curve. If you study the golden mean, or golden ratio, you will see what I,m suggesting. It may help to make a drawing of the piece ahead of time to see how the proportions work out.

>Scott, you've asked for a critique, so....It's very difficult to come up with a good form on a blank that's 6 1/2 in. tall x 2 1/2 in. The collar is too large for this narrow piece. If your tool doesn't allow you to turn through a very small opening, then just a curving raised rim would be better. I feel that a continuous curve from top to bottom is a must, and for a 2 1/2 in. dia. vessel, using the 1/3 rule, the foot should be a little less than 1 inch. Perhaps a height of around 4 inches would have been better.

Maybe all of that is more than you wanted to hear, but that's my opinion.

>Wally I appreciate your comments and I do agree the insert is to large. However we also have a good example of how can photo's lie. I took a pair of calipers to the piece last night and the collar is approximately 1 3/16 (opening is 1 inch) and I agree it is to large. However the piece piece is actually 2 5/8 inch diamter and the base is roughly 1 inch so I am very close to the golden mean on the diameter of foot. I accidentally made a very very slight ogee at the foot of the piece and the photo enhances and make it look larger so it give the piece a heavy feeling. What is even more interesting is that it has been setting on a table in my office for the past two days and everyone that has come into my office has picked it up and they were very slow to put it down, which is a sign that I have something right. I have found if a piece is not pleasing people either won't pick it up or they pick it up a put it down immediately. When a piece is pleasing you almost have to pry it out of their hands.
