Don Derry Class/Big Island Woodturners

>I spent the weekend with Don Derry. Our club, The Big Island Woodturners, had him over.
On Saturday, he did a general demo and introduced us to the term "the high spot" and explained his hollowing and painting techniques.
On Sunday was a hands on event limited to six participants. It was very interesting as he did not allow any measuring or marking tools. Everything was done "by the eye", which was somewhat different for the two of us machinists in attendance.
He is a very personable and talented person, and if you have the chance, he is definately worth the "price of admission.
Next Saturday is the day that we enter the pieces for, what I believe, is our sixth annual Big Island Woodturners Show. We normally have 40 or so members enter up to 4 turnings each. It will run the whole month of March and we will have various demo's each Saturday. The location is at the Wailoa Visitors Center and there is no admission charge.
There is also going to be an "Educational Exhibit" in the lower "Mini Fountain Gallery". This exhibit is of "Ornamental Plantings" found in ones own backyard. Some of these include,Ylang Ylang, White Teak, Plumbago, Abiu, Chocolate Pudding, Vegetable Humming Bird, Cannon Ball, Ear Pod Wattle, and Hong Kong Orchid.
