Basement's done, did a little turning

>Whew! Less than 2 weeks after the basement water problem, I'm done with the removal and reinstall of a new floor. This one is about bulletproof and what should have been there in the first place. Armstrong commercial grade 1/8" thick tiles.

Anyway - the new Powermatic won't be in for a while, so I fired up the standby, came up with this cherry piece. Also turned the spalted apple below - this was a bookmatched spalted blank from out of my woodpile - the other one is at the office, should be neat to see them both side by side. The apple warped, of course, but did not crack, and was turned start to finish in one session. The cherry was roughed out a few months ago and end grain waxed.

Not so happy with the inside profile on the apple piece but you can't go back!

Those look great! What finish did you use as it really gives the wood a nice glow. The spalting at one end of the apple bowl really makes that piece.

I suppose that is more properly called "crabapple". It came from a neighbor's front yard, I spotted it being cut down last spring and scored the entire trunk. It sat, halved, on the ground in my backyard wood pile till December when I got a chainsaw that could properly cut it up. Most of it had spalted beautifully by then. The owner of the tree had no idea I got the trunk and I suprised them at Christmas time (at least I think I suprised them) by dropping off a bowl on their front door from a "Secret Santa". I _really_ wanted to identify myself but resisted the urge successfully.

Both pieces are finished as normal for me - sanding to 12000 with micro mesh. Burnishing with a paper bag, 3 coats of Mylands Cellulose Sanding Sealer, each burnished in between. Finally buffed with the 3 wheel buffing system from Don Pencil.

I love the color and texture of crabapple. Unlike any other wood. And the smell while turning crabapple! The whole process of crabapple is terrific. Amazing how much crabapple moves.

The bowls look nice. The new lathe is going to be a great addition to your shop and a boost to your turning.
